Fez is the spiritual capital of Morocco with the most visible coexistence of Morocco’s Jewish and Muslim roots. It is also home to the oldest existing and currently operating university in the world. Its high walled ancient medina is a major attraction as its spread along hills so you can get lost for hours wandering its high and low turns. Just watch out for the donkey carts trying to pass the tight streets!
Also, among the maze of the medina you will find the famous leather tanneries of Fez where you’ll step back in time as you watch the tanners working the same way as they did over a thousand years ago.
In Meknes, you will explore the ancient city of Moulay Ismail, one of Morocco’s greatest rulers. You will also see the resting place of the last Sultan and walk through the corridors of the tomb hall and admire the stunning craftsmanship that exemplifies the best of Moroccan architecture and design. Nearby you can also discover the immense underground prison Habs Qara, which held about 60,000 slaves directly underneath the Koubbaat as-Sufara where Moulay Ismail received visiting Ambassadors.
Marrakech is home to the busiest and most vibrant open market in all of Africa, the Djemma el fna square. During the day, you can enjoy some of the freshest orange juice while passing snake charmers, spice and herb sellers, acrobats, dentists, and henna ladies. At night, the square becomes even more lively with Gnaoua musicians, storytellers, and the aroma of Moroccan cuisine from the famous food stands that set up every evening and work until the early hours of the morning. Right across from the square you will also see the most important mosque in Marrakech, the Koutoubia. In your tour you will also see the beautiful old palaces and gardens hidden in the medina.
The last imperial city and current capital of Morocco is Rabat. Located right on the Atlantic coast, it is the only imperial city with beach access. Here you will see the Hassan Tower, the minaret of an unfinished mosque that was meant to be part of the largest minaret in the world. Then take a trip into pre-Islamic times and see the Roman ruins of Chellah right in the metropolitan area of Rabat. It was the site of the Roman town known as Sala Colonia and was later used as a necropolis by the Almohad dynasty.
